POLO FIELD PROPOSAL UPDATES

Background
Haverford Township shares the use of the Polo Field with Lower Merion Township.  Lower Merion is planning to change the nature of their usage of the Polo Field beginning in Spring 2024, swapping out some of the private school usages for public school usage during weekday afternoons for Lower Merion's new Black Rock Middle School in Villanova.

The need has arisen because the LMSD Black Rock site (1860 W Montgomery Ave) does not have enough space to accommodate the field requirements for the middle school's athletic programs and the LMSD's plans to repurpose two nearby parcels (1800 W. Montgomery Ave and 1835 County Line Rd) which were purchased for this reason in 2019 have been met with great resistance by the surrounding neighborhood.

This blog will be updated regularly and should serve as a resource for keeping Brynford residents informed about the status of this proposal.

A brief statement from 5th Ward Commissioner, Laura Cavender, was read at the Brynford Civic Association's January meeting.  The proposed framework is based on the following four points:
- Haverford Township will get full ownership of the Polo Field
- Haverford Township will continue to jointly operate the Polo Field with Lower Merion Township
- Lower Merion Township will permit Lower Merion School District's new Black Rock Middle School to use the baseball and softball fields for the weekday afterschool slots.  Bus drop-off and pick-up is tentatively agreed to be taking place on Railroad Avenue.  Buses will park in Lower Merion Township during practices and games.
- Lower Merion School District will make a one-time $275k contribution to Haverford Township to be directed to improvements at the Polo Field.
Details of the agreement have yet to be hammered out.

The Brynford Civic Association would like to thank those members of the community who submitted comments after the 02/03/2022 Zoom meeting.  From what we understand, numerous neighbors voiced their opinions on the topic.

The Brynford Civic Association has also followed up the 02/03/2022 meeting with a formal response, which was sent to Dave Burman, the Haverford Township Manager, and Laura Cavender, the fifth ward commissioner. The goal of the response was to spell out clearly what information Lower Merion Township should include in a formal proposal to change the use of the Polo Field.  This information will be used by Haverford Township in further discussions with Lower Merion.

Lower Merion's Polo Field Proposal will be on the agenda at an upcoming meeting of the Haverford Board of Commissioners.  However, the date has not yet been announced.  The Brynford Civic Association will send a letter to notify membership when the date has been specified.  Be forewarned that this could happen with only one or two days' notice.  For those who prefer to track this information themselves, BoC agendas are published here.  BoC meetings are the first and second Mondays of every month.

Lower Merion Township mentioned at the 02/03/2022 meeting that they will be following up the initial Zoom meeting with additional information in the next several months.  The Brynford Civic Association will continue to post any updates here.
